Caffeine is highly beneficial for our body and mind – it keeps us alert and boosts our energy levels when we’re down. This is exactly what makes energy drinks so popular – they can keep your going when you don’t have the energy to do so. However, although caffeine is beneficial and can even treat problems such as headaches, getting it along a slew of chemicals from a can of energy drink is a sure way of destroying your health.

Several studies have confirmed a link between Red Bull and other energy drinks with heart attack, and the recent case of Cory Terry, a 33-year old Brooklyn resident, confirms what many experts were suspecting. Terry drank a can of Red Bull every day, and died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 33. According to his mother, he never smoked or drank and was pretty physically active, but drank Red Bull on a daily basis. 

Can Red Bull really cause a heart attack?

In short, yes. According to a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, energy drinks can worsen cardiovascular problems and may even cause heart attack in healthy people. The study involved 15 healthy subjects who were given 500 ml. of an unidentified energy drink per day with a similar composition to Red Bull. The results showed that the subject’s blood pressure was increased by nearly 10% after 4 hours, and over 10% after a week. The participants’ heart rate also went up, and both factors are associated with an increased risk of heart attack. High blood pressure and irregular heart rate both can damage the arteries which increases the risk of heart attack or stroke significantly.

What does Red Bull contain?

Besides caffeine and sugar, Red Bull also contains taurine, a powerful stimulator. There’s isn’t much research done on the ingredients in Red Bull, so we can’t say for sure if their effect is negative.

On the other hand, there are many studies done on Red Bull’s effects on our health. For example, one study done on Red Bull’s workout and post-workout effects have shown that the stimulants in the drink (caffeine and taurine), are not dangerous on their own, but when combined, they can harm the cardiovascular system and raise the risk of heart attack.

This confirms everything we previously knew – that energy drinks are highly harmful for our health and can have fatal consequences as well. This is why you need to avoid them – if you need a stimulant immediately, better go for a cup of coffee.
